about

"There was a point, probably around the melee that followed Dilla’s departure and Flying Lotus’ 1983 coming out, that the whole beat scene was a wonderful whirlwind of over compressed kick drums and 8 bit computer melodies. It was kind of a naïve headspace to be in, with producers just banging out the jams on basic equipment, making these short audio sketches that aimed to knock harder than anything else. In honesty, that endless competition to make something heavier and more nod worthy probably stemmed from the origins of Low End Theory when LA cats like Ras G, Gaslamp, Fly Lo and more used to play each other beats out in the parking lots of nightclubs and venues, but it’s influence is still being felt today, in the music of producers influenced by that orgy of music – people like Jonwayne (now on Stones Throw), Slugabed (who just released an album on Ninja Tune) and a lesser known producer called Richard Colvaen.

Having already been introduced to us through our good pal Dynooo, and releasing as part of a split 7” on Belgian label Vlek, Colvaen’s just put out his debut album, Spun, on the fledgling Crackling Claps label, and it plays like one of the best ‘unknown-producer-does-super-heavy-beat-tape’ projects we’ve discovered in ages. It’s easy to compare the material on Spun to that of someone like Samiyam given the strength in its direction/conviction and its sheer, boom bap physicality, but there’s a level of curveball sampling, hoover bass and rough programming that gives the project its own distinct menagerie of voices."
